Peres for Prez
May 31, 2007 -- JERUSALEM - Shimon Peres said yesterday he will ask parliament to elect him Israel's head of state, taking over a mostly ceremonial role that has been overshadowed by a rape inquiry into the outgoing president.
"I have decided to answer the calls to be a candidate for the presidency," the former prime minister said.
Polls show most Israelis want Peres as president. The vote will take place June 13.
