Black Garlic - Heard of It?

Already popular in Korea and Japan, black garlic is simply regular garlic that's aged and fermented until it develops a dark color and soft texture. It may look funny, but the flavor is seriously savory with a touch of sweetness (think hints of molasses), minus the bite and pungency of raw garlic.

And food lovers aren't the only fans of this "it" ingredient. Black garlic has long been praised for its health benefits, which include high levels of antioxidants (some claim it has almost double those in regular garlic) and antibacterial compounds believed to fight cancer.

Buy some online and start experimenting by using it in your favorite dishes (like roast chicken), these recipes, or any way you like. Its mild flavor and tender consistency make it so versatile, you could even pop some straight into your mouth as a snack.

THANKS!

Go Green East Harlem!

"At first glance, you might not see East Harlem as the place for fresh thinking about healthy urban living - Go Green East Harlem will change your mind." Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer

I am excited to inform you of a very special project we've created. Integrative Nutrition has teamed up with the Borough of Manhattan to create a cookbook and to offer free health counseling for the people of East Harlem.

The cookbook will showcase 100 recipes (in English and Spanish) provided by restaurants, caterers, farmers' markets and community members of East Harlem. Recipes come from many neighborhood favorites like the Greenmarket's peach-corn salsa, Mo-Bay's collard greens and Rao's famous Lemon Chicken. We have provided recipe comments and an icon system to help readers understand the health benefits of the recipes.

In addition, we will be offering free group counseling. Sessions will meet once a week for 8 weeks at a facility provided by the city.

Drink to Detox

There is no doubt that we live in a toxic world and sometimes our bodies need some help coping with big exposures such as when the neighbor uses a lot of herbicides on their lawn.
Here is a famous detox remedy for times when you know that you are chemically overloaded. It is bittersweet with some spice.

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about the equivalent of the juice of one lemon)
1/6th of a teaspoon (or a pinch) of cayenne
1 to 2 teaspoons maple syrup
10 oz. filtered water

Combine ingredients in a glass, stir to blend, and drink. Drink a glass for four-five days in a row for best results.
